Marshall head or cab?

Marshalls are well known and a lot of bands I listen to use them. but do they use them for their speakers or for the heads and tone? cause I'm thinking of getting maybe a peavey 6505 or bogner uberschall head to go with a marshall speaker or is that a bad idea? what are the characteristics of a marshall head and the speakers?
